Castellani, Alekno; Final Candidates to Lead Iran Volleyball

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation (IRIVF) president Mohammad Reza Davarzani said that Daniel Castellani and Vladimir Alekno are their final candidates to take charge of Iran national volleyball team.

Daniel Castellani, Andrea Giani, Ferdinando De Giorgi, Lorenzo Bernardi and Vladimir Alekno were among the five candidates in the running to take the helm of Iran but Davarzani has said that the technical committee has reached an agreement with Castellani and Alekno.

“We've narrowed down our list of candidates to second. A Russian coach and an Argentine are among the final candidates,” Davarzani said in an interview with a Radio Varzesh.

“Castellani and Alekno have sent their programs and we will appoint new head coach in a session with the participation of the committee members and experts within the next days,” he said.

Alekno has led Russia to a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games and Castellani helped Argentina win a bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Iran volleyball team is without a coach since parting ways with Igor Kolakovic in March.

In the Olympic Games, Iran has been drawn in Pool A along with Japan, Poland, Italy, Canada and Venezuela.

Pool B consists of Brazil, USA, Russia, Argentina, France and Tunisia.
