TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters calling for the resignation of Chilean President Sebastian Pinera in Santiago on Friday.

Clashes have been reported and three metro stations were closed after protesters gathered on Friday in Santiago's La Alameda.

Protesters initially gathered in two groups in the vicinity of Plaza Baquedano (Plaza Italia) and in the University of Chile but both later converged at Plaza Baquedano (Plaza Italia) and obstructed traffic in the area.

Authorities have diverted traffic and temporarily closed La Moneda, Universidad de Chile, and Santa Lucía metro stations.

Demonstrators demanded the resignation of President Sebastián Piñera and the release of individuals arrested amid previous protests.

Protesters were seen throwing objects and molotov cocktails at police, who in turn used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the hundreds of demonstrators who had gathered near the Moneda presidential palace.

Protesters were also seen holding a banner calling for the release of all those who remain in detention as a result of the widespread anti-government protests that began in October 2019.

Chile has been rocked by anti-government protests since 2019, leading to a referendum on October 25 in which citizens overwhelmingly voted for a new constitution.
