Speaker: Iran’s Parliament Backs Closer Ties with Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf voiced support for the promotion of ties with Afghanistan in all fields.

In a meeting with Afghan ambassador to Tehran on Monday, Qalibaf said the Iranian Parliament supports the enhancement of cooperation with neighboring Afghanistan in various fields.

He also stressed the need to finalize a document of comprehensive cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan.

Qalibaf further said that intra-Afghan negotiations led by the country’s legal government and without pressure from the third countries would establish peace and stability in neighboring Afghanistan.

The speaker also pointed to the longstanding ties and cultural commonalities between Iran and Afghanistan, saying the two countries have always enjoyed cordial relations, which is a strong support for promotion of ties.

The Afghan envoy, for his part, hailed Iran’s support for his country at different junctures, expressing his appreciation for the sympathy of the Iranian government and nation over the recent terrorist attacks in Kabul.

On Saturday, a rocket barrage slammed into the heavily fortified Green Zone of Kabul where many embassies and international firms are based.

At least eight civilians have been killed in the rocket strike, which has wounded dozens of others.
