Countering Israel Common Goal of Iran, Syria: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said a common objective that Tehran and Damascus pursue in their cooperation is to confront the Zionist regime.

Confronting the Zionist occupiers and terrorism is the common goal of Iran and Syria, Rouhani said in a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, held in Tehran on Tuesday.

“No doubt we must press on with resistance and fortitude until the end of the road and destruction of terrorists,” the president added.

Denouncing US President Donald Trump’s plan for Israeli annexation of part of the Syrian soil, the Iranian president stressed the need for continuous battle with the Zionist occupiers until the liberation of all occupied territories, including the Golan Heights.

Iran is determined to keep supporting the Syrian government and nation as its “strategic ally” and will stand by the Arab country until the ultimate victory, Rouhani added.

For his part, Mekdad praised the “valuable and honorable” political ties between Syria and Iran as a model of genuine relations and friendship for other nations.

The Syrian foreign minister also decried the American violation of international agreements, saying the Islamic Republic has taken appropriate and constructive measures to make the JCPOA parties honor their commitments.

Syria’s new foreign minister has travelled to Iran in his first foreign trip after taking office.

Mekdad has held meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.
