Envoy: Iran Begins Research on Upgraded Fuel for Tehran Research Reactor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s ambassador to the international organizations in Vienna said Tehran has started research and development activities to develop an upgraded fuel for a research reactor in the capital.

In comments on Wednesday, Kazem Gharibabadi said Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi has released a report to inform the IAEA member states about Iran’s new decision.

The ambassador explained that the new process would take place in three stages, the first of which would be uranium metal production.

The IAEA was notified of Iran’s plan for upgrading fuel for the research reactor in Tehran two years ago, he said, adding that the project would technically put Iran among the leading countries producing new fuels.

The IAEA inspectors visited the fuel plate production plant three days ago, Gharibabadi noted.

Iran’s new move is part of a series of measures passed recently by the Parliament, dubbed the strategic action for lifting of the sanctions and safeguarding national interests.
