Zarif Arrives in Baku for Talks on Regional Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif began a tour of the Caucasus with a trip to the Republic of Azerbaijan for a series of negotiations on regional cooperation.

Speaking to reporters upon arrival in Baku on Sunday evening, Zarif said the key issue on the agenda of the talks will be regional cooperation “which is very important to us.”

“Holding consultations on regional cooperation with these countries which have very good and close bilateral ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran is among the most important objectives of this trip,” he said, pointing to the upcoming visits to Russia, Armenia, Georgia, and Turkey.

“We have always welcomed our neighbors in that regard, and will do so in the future,” Zarif said.

The top Iranian diplomat said he will hold talks with the Azeri officials on the reconstruction of the recently-liberated areas in the Karabakh region and cooperation in order to preserve stability in that region.

The completion of the South-North and South-West Transport Corridors will be among the other topics to be discussed in the visit to Baku, he added.
