Iran Not to Allow Revival of Daesh: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson pledged that Iran will work with its allies to prevent a resurgence of the Daesh (ISIl or ISIS) terrorist group in Iraq and elsewhere.

“Standing by its allies, Iran won’t let Daesh reorganize itself in Iraq or other countries,” Saeed Khatibzadeh said at a press conference on Monday, a few days after deadly suicide bombings in a central Baghdad market.

Denouncing the terrorist attack, the spokesman said Iran has strong popular and political bonds with Iraq. “The pain and sufferings of Iraqi people is our pain and suffering.”

Terrorism has its roots in ideological and organizational extremism, he said, adding that certain elements have been involved in the attack to take advantage of the situation and continue former US president Donald Trump’s policy in the region.

At least 32 people were killed and 110 wounded in a rare twin suicide bombing that tore through a busy area of central Baghdad on Thursday morning.

Iraqi officials say one of the two perpetrators lured a crowd of people towards him in a market in the central Tayaran Square by feigning illness, only to detonate his explosives. The second bomber reportedly struck as people helped victims of the first attack.

The Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the fatal attack.
