TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri expressed his condolences to Turkey over fatalities in an army helicopter crash in the neighboring country.

In letters to Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Yasar Guler and to Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, Major General Baqeri offered his condolences over deaths in the crash of the military helicopter, which included a ranking army commander.

An army helicopter crashed in southeast Turkey on Thursday, killing 11 military personnel, including a lieutenant general, and injuring two others.

The Cougar-type helicopter fell down near the village of Cekmece, close to the town of Tatvan, in the predominantly Kurdish-populated Bitlis province.

Nine of the victims died at the crash site, while two died of their injuries in hospital, officials said.
