Iran Warns Against Misuse of Human Rights Council by Certain Countries

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s envoy to the UN office in Geneva warned US and UK against abusing the UN Human Rights Council and censured their hostile measures against Islamic Republic.

Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh, the Permanent representative of Iran to the international organizations in Geneva, made his remarks at the 46th regular session of the Human Rights Council (22 February to 23 March 2021) on March 23 where a resolution against the human rights situation in Iran was approved with bare minimum of votes.

Hamaneh argued that the claim made by advocates of anti-Iran resolution is ‘invalid’ as their actions contradict their words.

“Take a look at the countries supporting the anti-Iran resolution,” said Hamaneh, noting that the United States, which is one of the resolution's sponsors, has a long history of committing organized crimes around the world.

Date of US hostility against Iran goes back to 1953, noted Hamaneh in reference to US logistical plan to initiate military coup against Iranian Democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadeq.

The US has been hostile towards Iran since 1953, according to Hamaneh, as he was referring to a US logistical attempt to launch a military coup against Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadeq.

Iranian Ambassador said that the US has also been accomplice in the Iraqi imposed war against Iran in the 80’s.

He described the United States as the country that had placed the most inhumane sanctions on the Iranian people.

In his remarks, Hamaneh declared that the decision imposed to the Human Rights Council to appoint a special rapporteur on the condition of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran is invalid.

Supporters of the decision expect nothing but receiving black reports on Iran from the special rapporteur.

Concluding his remarks, the Iranian representative said that such moves cannot hinder Iran's ongoing efforts on its route, adding that such resolutions not only do not contribute to the advancement of human rights, but they also seriously jeopardize the credibility and status of the Human Rights Council by creating an atmosphere of confrontation and political abuse.

Anti-Iran resolution to extend mission of special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran was approved at the Council with 21 votes in favor and 26 against or abstained.

China, Russia, Cuba, Pakistan and Venezuela have been among the countries called the Council's decision as unconstructive and fruitless.
