Zarif Lauds Iraq’s Push for Regional Talks
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif praised Iraq for its efforts to pave the way for regional dialogue, hoping that it would help countries in the region come to a serious understanding.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, held in Baghdad on Monday, the top Iranian diplomat hailed the government of Iraq for its efforts to prepare the ground for dialogue in the region.
“We hope that such efforts would result in further dialogues and more serious understanding in the region,” Zarif added.
He also noted that Iran welcomes Iraq’s “pivotal and strong role” in the region, expressing hope that Iraq’s growing role would contribute to regional stability and calm.
Zarif pointed to the “very good talks” with the Iraqi foreign minister before the press conference, saying they have talked about the course of negotiations among Iran, Russia, China, the UK, France and Germany about the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal.
He emphasized that Iran does not hold any talks with the US, although American diplomats are in Vienna, reiterating that Tehran will fully return to its JCPOA commitments as soon as the US administration honors its commitments under the JCPOA in a verifiable manner.
For his part, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Baghdad is playing a positive, significant and vital role in ensuring regional peace and stability.
The senior Iraqi diplomat also noted that he and Zarif have talked about the relations between the two neighbors and a series of issues that need to be addressed, such as the coronavirus challenge.
Zarif has traveled to Iraq after a trip to Qatar.
