Zarif Meets Top Kurdish Authorities in Erbil

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held meetings with senior officials of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government in a visit to Erbil on Tuesday.

The top Iranian diplomat traveled to Erbil after a tight schedule in Baghdad that included meetings with senior Iraqi officials as well as religious and political figures.

In Erbil, Zarif held separate meetings with Prime Minister of Kurdistan Region Masrour Barzani, KRG President Nechirvan Barzani, and leader of Kurdistan Democratic Party Masoud Barzani.

The Iranian foreign minister also held talks with Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Qubad Talabani and co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Bafel Talabani.

Zarif emphasized in the meetings that Iran’s relations with Iraq, and with the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, are strong and based upon mutual interests, and highlighted the significance that Tehran attaches to stability and security of the Kurdish autonomous region.

He also weighed plans for the removal of obstacles to promotion of economic and trade ties between Iran and the KRG.
