Iran’s FM, Azeri President Meet in Baku

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at a meeting in Baku weighed plans to enhance relations between the two neighboring countries.

The top Iranian diplomat met with the Azeri president during a visit to Baku on Tuesday.

The two officials hailed the growing relations between Iran and Azerbaijan in recent years, calling for plans to promote cooperation in various fields.

The other topics discussed by Zarif and Aliyev related to the joint economic projects, Iran’s participation in the minesweeping operations in and reconstruction of the Azeri territories liberated after the most recent war in the Karabakh region, and the latest status of implementation of a ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

They also talked about the railroad routes connecting Iran, Azerbaijan and Armenia, the regional initiative for six-party cooperation, the transit corridors, and other issues of mutual interest shared by Tehran and Baku.

In January, Iran and Azerbaijan signed an agreement at the conclusion of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation in Tehran, focusing economic interaction on joint investment plans and construction projects in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Iran has already expressed willingness to participate in the reconstruction of the Azeri regions recently liberated after a war between Baku and Yerevan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
