Final Deal in JCPOA Talks Must Fulfill Iran’s Criteria: Araqchi

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s top negotiator in the Vienna talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal emphasized that a final agreement at the conclusion of the negotiations must satisfy Tehran’s criteria and principles, noting that Iran is not in a hurry to strike a deal.

The sixth round of negotiations to resuscitate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action began in Vienna on Saturday as the parties to the deal attended a meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said his team seeks to achieve a “good and suitable agreement” for the Islamic Republic.

“We are not in a hurry, nor do we waste the time in this process,” he noted.

“What is important is that any agreement should meet the Islamic Republic of Iran’s criteria and principles,” Araqchi underlined.

“It’s now the time for the other parties to make a decision. We have already made our tough decisions and remained in the JCPOA. We are prepared to continue the negotiations until they (other parties) could arrive at a decision,” he stated.

On the process of the new round of negotiations, the Iranian deputy minister said the expert-level sessions have begun immediately after the JCPOA Joint Commission meeting, adding, “The negotiations will go on within the next days until we reach a conclusion and have a nearly complete vision of a final agreement.”

The most recent round of JCPOA negotiations that began on April 6 examines the potential of revitalization of the nuclear deal and the US’ likely return to it.

The US left the JCPOA in 2018 and restored the economic sanctions that the accord had lifted. Tehran retaliated with remedial nuclear measures that it is entitled to take under the JCPOA’s Paragraph 36.
