Ongoing JCPOA Talks Unlikely to Be Final Round: Iranian Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – It is unlikely that the most recent round of the talks that are underway in Vienna on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal will be the final round of negotiations, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said.

In comments at a weekly press conference on Monday, Khatibzadeh said it is still early to judge the results of the Vienna talks for the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, but “it is unlikely that this week will be the final round” of negotiations.

“The Vienna negotiations have not reached a dead end and are still underway,” he added.

The negotiations have not turned into talks of attrition, though there is no extra time, the spokesperson stated, dismissing any connection between the Vienna talks and the domestic developments in Iran.

Khatibzadeh reiterated that Iran’s criterion is the policies already declared by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

“Our stance is principled and entails the fulfillment of interests of people,” he stressed.

The Joint Commission of the JCPOA has held a fresh meeting in the Austrian capital to evaluate the latest status of the negotiations aimed at reviving the nuclear deal.

The most recent round of JCPOA negotiations that began on April 6 examines the potential of revitalization of the nuclear deal and the US’ likely return to it.

The US left the JCPOA in 2018 and restored the economic sanctions that the accord had lifted. Tehran retaliated with remedial nuclear measures that it is entitled to take under the JCPOA’s Paragraph 36.
