Iran Urges Restraint after Tension along Armenia, The Azerbaijan Republic Borders

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh called on Baku and Yerevan to show restraint after recent clashes between border guards of the Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia.

Azerbaijani and Armenian forces exchanged fire for several hours along a section of their border as tensions continue to simmer between the two countries after last year's war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Both countries accused the other side of provoking the flare-up on the evening of July 19 along Armenia’s Yeraskh section of the border with Azerbaijan's Naxcivan exclave.

Referring to the continuing sporadic border clashes, Khatibzadeh stressed the need for achieving a lasting peace in the South Caucasus region.

He expressed regret over the casualties during the clashes between the border forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, and called for the restraint of both sides and the need for a peaceful settlement of the border disputes.

The spokesperson further announced the the Islamic Republic of Iran’s preparedness to assist the parties in achieving a permanent peace.
