Fifth Shipment of Iran’s Humanitarian Aid Delivered to Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The interim Taliban government in Afghanistan has received a fifth cargo of humanitarian aid from Iran.

Weighing about 50 tons and containing sugar, rice, oil, and hygiene supplies, the humanitarian aid was handed over to the Afghan Red Crescent on behalf of the Red Crescent delegation of the Islamic Republic on Tuesday.

Iran's charge d'affaires was present during the delivery on the tarmac at Kabul airport.

On Monday, Iran dispatched a humanitarian aid cargo to Afghanistan from the Dugharun land border, weighing 94 tons and including food and medical supplies. Six semi-trucks were used to convey the material, which was transferred to Taliban officials at the border.

In recent weeks, three other consignments of Iranian humanitarian aid had arrived at Kabul airport.

Afghanistan has been destitute and engulfed in a long-term humanitarian disaster as a result of two decades of foreign war and occupation. All foreign soldiers were removed from Afghanistan in August of this year, bringing the US-led war in the country to a close.

Since then, Iran has boosted its humanitarian aid to the war-stricken country. The Islamic Republic has also spent millions of dollars in development and rehabilitation projects in its eastern neighboring country, including the construction of hundreds of kilometers of motorways and railroads.

According to the United Nations, Iran is home to roughly three million Afghans, including two million undocumented migrants. For the past four decades, many of them have lived in Iran.
