IAEA Under Influence of Major Powers: Nuclear Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said that the main reason behind IAEA’s discriminatory behavior towards Iran is that the international organization is under the influence of major powers.

Stressing that Iran has several times warned the UN nuclear watchdog over such behaviors, Kamalvandi noted that international powers have politicized a part of Iran's peaceful nuclear program, despite the fact that Islamic Republic is developing a peaceful nuclear industry and has met all of its obligations under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Safeguards Agreement.

"It is a fact that the IAEA has not treated Iran as it should," Kamalvandi said on Thursday, adding, "We have constantly reminded (the organization) of this."

Kamalvandi added that Iran is producing nuclear products in accordance with international standards, but certain countries seek to accuse Iran by making false claims.

Calling on domestic media to keep vigilance over foreign conspiracies, he noted that everyone should try to realize Iran’s nuclear rights and prevent from portraying a distorted image of the Islamic country.

The Iranian nuclear official also noted that Iran has mentioned all these issues during negotiations with the IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi.

"Iranian officials have put forward their demands in Tuesday meeting in Tehran," he added, noting that both sides have reached good progress in the talks, but they could not finalize all issues because of lack of time.

Underlining Iran’s willingness to continue to work with the IAEA, despite the organization is being under the influence of major powers, Kamalvandi predicted that they will never stop accusing Iran of looking for a nuclear weapon, adding that this is why Iran believes that [negotiations with the IAEA] are necessary to refute such baseless claims.

The spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran stated that Iran does not have any nuclear material at Karaj nuclear site and that is the reason it is not subjected to safeguards agreement.

Kamalvandi also added that Iran produces advanced centrifuges at its Karaj facility and the country will not ask anyone for permission to do so, as it is the Islamic Republic’s right under the Article 4 of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and there are no restrictions for that.
