Iran, Turkmenistan Weigh Plans to Boost Economic Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ranking diplomats from Iran and Turkmenistan discussed ways to promote economic cooperation between the two neighbors and carry out their previous agreements.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mahdi Safari, who is in Ashgabat to attend the preliminary session of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit, held talks with Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Rasit Meredow on Friday.

The Iranian and Turkmen diplomats discussed the most important areas of cooperation between the two neighbors in the meeting, including interaction in the fields of energy, gas and electricity, transportation and transit, export of technical and engineering services, as well as health and treatment.

Safari said the principled policy of Iran is to prioritize the development of relations with the neighboring countries, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made great efforts to strengthen economic diplomacy with the neighbors.

For his part, the Turkmen foreign minister said the two countries must grasp opportunities for bilateral economic cooperation, pointing to the emphasis that the presidents have put on the development of bilateral ties.

Meredow also hailed the positive results of his recent visit to Tehran for a joint economic commission, voicing Turkmenistan’s readiness to implement the agreements with Iran.
