Iran Reports 130 More Deaths from COVID-19

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Health Ministry on Thursday reported 130 deaths from COVID-19 over a 24-hour period as the aggressive Omicron variant spreads in the country.

Iranian health officials reported 33,681 new cases of infection in the country.

Iran is experiencing an alarming rise in the number of COVID-19 infections, fueled by the spread of the Omicron variant across the country, following a period of relative calm.

According to the ministry, 2,655 new patients have been hospitalized and 3,097 COVID-19 patients are in critical conditions and in intensive care units.

It also noted that 6,238,083 patients out of a total of 6,730,608 infected people have recovered or been discharged from hospitals.

More than 61,373,600 Iranians have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, over 54,715,414 have received the second dosage, and more than 20.77 million have gotten the booster shots.

Worldwide, coronavirus deaths rose for the fifth consecutive week, with the 68,000 fatalities reported last week representing a 7 percent jump from the previous week.

Half a million  people around the world have died of COVID-19 since the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was first detected in November, while about 100,000 of the deaths since Omicron was declared a “variant of concern” occurred in the United States, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.
