Tehran, Beijing Hope to See A Stable, Developed Afghanistan: Iranian FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said Iran and China hope to witness a stable and developed Afghanistan.

“I am so pleased to be in China to participate in the meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s neighbors,” Amirabdollahian wrote in a tweet upon his arrival in China.

“Afghanistan deserves more attention from the international community. Iran and China reaffirm their support for the independence and national unity of Afghanistan and the Afghan people’s right to decide their fate, and they hope to see a stable and developed Afghanistan that would interact with neighbors,” he added.

The meeting, to be held on March 30 and 31, will reportedly focus on humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people and call on the US to return the Afghan people's assets.

The event’s first and second editions were respectively hosted by Pakistan and the Islamic Republic last year.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin announced on Monday that foreign ministers or representatives from Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are scheduled to attend the meeting.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will host the meeting, and acting foreign minister of the Afghan interim government Amir Khan Muttaqi will also be attending the gathering. The foreign ministers of Indonesia and Qatar have also been invited to join as special guests, according to Wang Wenbin.

Wang Yi visited Afghanistan last week in a trip that many foreign media described as surprising.

Iran has repeatedly stressed the need for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan in order to ensure that country’s domestic stability and regional security.
