Iran Condemns Terrorist Attack in Afghanistan’s Herat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned a terrorist attack on a gathering of people in Afghanistan’s western city of Herat, warning of the enemies’ divisive plots.

In a statement released on Sunday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh strongly condemned the terrorist attack by Takfiri elements on a gathering of the oppressed people of Herat in a recreational area in Jebril Township of the city that left a large number of Afghan citizens dead and wounded.

He also offered condolences to the families of victims of the attack and to the people of Afghanistan, wishing patience and divine reward for the families and fast recovery for those injured in the attack.

The spokesman once again warned against the divisive plots of the enemies of the Muslim people.

Khatibzadeh stressed the need for the rulers of Afghanistan to assume responsibility for the security of the Afghan citizens and to beef up security measures to protect people, most notably the more vulnerable ethno-sectarian groups of the Afghan people, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

Iran is confident that the Muslim brothers and sisters in Afghanistan will foil the enemies’ conspiracies to cause divisions in the country through solidarity, co-thinking and joint efforts, he concluded.

At least five civilians were killed and 25 others injured in two explosions in Afghanistan’s Herat province on Friday, Taliban officials said.

According to The Associated Press, Herat provincial spokesman, Mahmood Rasoly said the two bombs went off among civilians at a field used for traditional Afghan games, such as mud wrestling and Buzkashi, played with horse-mounted players.

Several attacks are reported each week throughout Afghanistan, including some claimed by Daesh terrorist group.

The Friday explosions, however, were not claimed by anyone.
