Iranian Envoy Urges Respect for Syria’s Sovereignty

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ambassador of Iran to the European Union Gholamhossein Dehqani described respecting the territorial integrity and political sovereignty of Syria as the sole way to resolve the crisis in the Arab country.

Dehqani delivered an address to the 6th Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” on May 10.

Elaborating on Iran’s stances on the Syrian crisis and the ways to resolve it, Dehqani criticized certain western governments for adopting an approach that has led to the crisis in the Arab country.

Satisfactory stability has been restored to Syria, the Iranian envoy noted, adding that the only way to ensure sustainable peace in the Arab country is to respect its territorial integrity and political sovereignty.

He emphasized that the terrorist groups must leave Syria and the double standards adopted by the European countries regarding extremism, which categorizes terrorists as good and bad, must be corrected.

The Iranian envoy finally noted that such simple-minded divisions would only deepen the dimensions of the crisis and threaten the world peace and security because terrorism cannot be harnessed in one single region.

The Brussels Conference was aimed at continuing support for the Syrian people in Syria and the region and mobilizing the international community in support of a comprehensive and credible political solution to the Syria conflict, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

As with the five previous editions, Brussels VI also addressed the most critical humanitarian and resilience issues affecting Syrians and communities hosting refugees from Syria, both inside the country and in the region.

Brussels VI also renewed the international community’s political and financial support for Syria’s neighbors, particularly Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, as well as Egypt and Iraq.

The conference also provided an interactive platform for dialogue with civil society and NGOs active in Syria and the region.
