Iranian Adviser Rejects Any Change in Regional Borders

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs reiterated Tehran’s outright opposition to any change in the region's political geography.

Ali Akbar Velayati made the comments in a meeting with former member of Russia’s State Duma Sergey Nikolayevich Baburin, held in Tehran.

On the developments in the South Caucasus region, Velayati echoed the remarks made by Ayatollah Khamenei, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran would not accept any change in the current boundaries. Undoubtedly, the regional security must be maintained.”

He also pointed to the war in Ukraine, saying the US and NATO are the main culprits for the spread of clashes. “The contemporary world is not unipolar anymore. It is highly important for independent states to be careful about their (Western) infiltration into the region.”

In a meeting with the Russian president in Tehran in July 2022, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that the West is opposed to the existence of a strong, independent Russia, described NATO as being a dangerous entity, and added, “If the way is opened for NATO, it will recognize no limits. If it hadn’t been stopped in Ukraine, it would have later started a similar war in Crimea.”
