Iran Urges Negotiated Settlement of Political Issues in Lebanon

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Reaffirming the Islamic Republic’s support for the people and government of Lebanon, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian called on all Lebanese political currents to push for the completion of political processes through dialogue and compromise.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Beirut on Thursday night, the top Iranian diplomat said he has visited Lebanon at the formal invitation of his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib.

Amirabdollahian noted that he has traveled to Beirut to hold consultations about a series of bilateral, regional and international issues, including the latest developments in Palestine.

Reaffirming Iran’s unwavering support for the people, government, Army and the resistance forces of Lebanon, he added, “We invite all Lebanese political currents to push for the election of a president and completion of the political process as soon as possible through the course of dialogue and compromise.”

Amirabdollahian also expressed confidence that various political currents of Lebanon would be able to choose a president competently and without allowing any foreign interference.

The Iranian foreign minister is going to hold meetings with his counterpart, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon Nabih Berri during his stay in Beirut.
