Record-Breaking Freeze to Hit Northeast US with Bitter Cold

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A dangerous and possibly record-breaking freeze is set to hit the Northeast US, with bitter cold spreading into the northern Great Lakes and upper Midwest first.

By Thursday evening, the wind chill is expected to reach minus 20s in Minneapolis, while on Friday morning, it will drop to minus 18 degrees in Chicago, according to CBS news.

On Friday morning, the cold front will move into the Northeast, bringing wind chills of 0 degrees in Boston, minus 10 degrees in Buffalo, and minus 25 degrees in Burlington, Vermont.

The coldest air for the Northeast is forecast to hit Saturday morning, with wind chills of minus 33 degrees in Boston, minus 23 degrees in Hartford, and minus 9 degrees in New York City.

The most extreme forecast is for Caribou, Maine, near the Canadian border, where wind chills could fall as low as minus 65 degrees on Saturday morning, which would be the coldest wind chill on record.

However, the extreme cold will not last for long. New York City is expected to thaw to 46 degrees on Sunday and 50 degrees on Monday.

The core of dangerously cold air and winds will arrive Friday night and pass over the Northeast, especially northern New England. On Saturday morning, subzero air temperatures are forecast to spread across the rest of New York and New England, forecasters said. This will lead to wind chills of -40 to -60 across northern New England and -25 to -45 in eastern New York and Massachusetts.

The National Weather Service has issued specific alerts for various parts of the region, but the advice was broadly similar: Limit your time outdoors.

In New York City, officials warned residents to use caution when operating space heaters. Last winter, a space heater sparked the fire at the Twin Parks apartment in the Bronx that killed 19 people.

Temperatures are expected to return to normal on Sunday.
