Spokesman Hits Back at German FM over Tweet on Poisoning Cases in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani, in a sarcastic post on his Twitter account, responded to a tweet from Germany’s foreign minister regarding the recent poisoning incidents in a number of schools in Iran.

“Ms. (German foreign) minister, this destructive and anti-security act is under investigation. The Iranian government is very serious about identifying the criminals and eradicating this ill-will. We will not allow anyone to cause insecurity for Iranian girl students with political motivation,” Kanaani said in a tweet on Friday.

“But one of the bitter realities that still needs transparency is the chemical poisoning by #German_toxic_gases for which the German government is responsible and keeps claiming lives. Your expression of concern about this issue is hypocritical and meddlesome,” the spokesman said in response to the recent comments from German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Baerbock said on Friday that reports of poison attacks on school girls in Iran are shocking and must be investigated fully.

Iran’s president and foreign minister say the mysterious poisoning of schoolgirls in several cities is in line with a hybrid war being waged on the country by the enemies.

The incident started in late November in the city of Qom where about 50 female students fell ill and had to be transported to hospital. Similar poisonings have since happened in several other schools in Qom, Tehran, and Kermanshah in the west and Ardabil in the northwest. Scores of schoolgirls have been affected in each incident, and some have had to be hospitalized.
