Arab League Secretary General Welcomes Iran-Saudi Diplomatic Relations

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed his approval of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

In a tweet on Saturday, Aboul Gheit commented on the recent agreement that the two countries reached in China, calling it an end to the "state of escalation" that had persisted for over seven years.

The Egyptian diplomat praised the diplomatic reconciliation as a positive step towards a new era of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which would lead to regional stability.

Aboul Gheit also commended the efforts made by Iraq, China, and the Sultanate of Oman to broker the political agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier this week, the two countries released a joint statement in Beijing announcing the reopening of their embassies and resumption of diplomatic ties after seven years of tensions.

After Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to China, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Shamkhani, met with Saudi officials in Beijing to follow up on agreements reached on the issue since March 6.
