TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Left-wing activists in occupied Palestine staged a protest in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem al-Quds to show their support for Palestinians who are facing displacement from their homes.

They rejected the displacement policy implemented by the Israeli army in the area.

Last week, rights group Adalah called on Israel's supreme court to put pressure on the Tel Aviv regime to remove the checkpoints erected at the entrances to the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Adalah Attorney Suhad Bishara filed a petition on behalf of the residents and demanded the immediate dismantlement of all the checkpoints in and around the western part of the neighborhood. According to Bishara, the checkpoints serve as collective punishment and an attempt to prevent legitimate protests and support for Palestinian families facing forced eviction.

Meanwhile, the Civic Coalition for Palestinian Rights' General Director, Zakaria Odeh, called the police's treatment of the Palestinian residents racist and violent, and part of a comprehensive and systemic effort to displace and dispossess Palestinians from their homeland.

The Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood has seen several crackdowns by Israeli forces against Palestinians protesting against the threatened expulsion of dozens of Palestinian families from their homes. Israeli settler organizations have claimed ownership of land in Sheikh Jarrah since Israel seized East al-Quds in a 1967 war and have filed multiple lawsuits to evict Palestinians from the area, which much of the international community considers illegal under international law.

Sheikh Jarrah is home to approximately 300 Palestinians, who face the possibility of being evicted from their homes. The international community considers the Israeli settlement structures illegal under international law due to their construction on occupied territory.
