Peruvian Capital Ravaged by Cyclone Yaku Floods, Houses Destroyed (+Video)

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Parts of the Peruvian capital of Lima were destroyed as floods caused by Cyclone Yaku battered the city.

The Chillon River overflowed, destroying around 25 homes and leaving residents salvaging what they could from the ruins, according to Lapren Salatina.

Emergency management personnel were dispatched to the affected district to evaluate the damage and assess the victims' condition.

The country’s Defense Minister Jorge Chavez warned that nearly 60 percent of homes in Rimac, Chillon, and Lurin river basins are in vulnerable areas, putting residents at risk. Chavez pledged to send a multi-purpose vessel carrying motor pumps, machinery, water, and humanitarian aid to help the affected regions.

Forecasts predict heavy downpours on Tuesday and Wednesday, increasing the risk of flooding and mudslides. Seven deaths have been reported in recent days due to rain-related incidents.

A state of emergency has been declared in 400 districts nationwide, and President Dina Boluarte has extended the emergency declaration to 18 districts in Lima and four in Callao for 60 days to mitigate flood damage.
