Mass Protests Erupt across Occupied Palestine over Controversial Judicial Reform (+Video)
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in the center of Tel Aviv on Saturday, as demonstrations against a controversial judicial reform erupted across occupied Palestine.
The Israeli regime's police blocked roads in the city, with most protesters gathering near the Azrieli Center, home to government buildings, according to a Sputnik correspondent.
The anti-regime protests, partially in response to a pro-reform demonstration in Jerusalem al-Quds earlier in the week, were announced in 150 locations across occupied territories, with organizers urging people to protest against what they call "dictatorship." Protesters shouted slogans and criticized the regime during the demonstrations.
The reform, which would curtail the supreme court's power to review and strike down unconstitutional laws and give the cabinet a greater say in selecting judges, has faced opposition for 17 consecutive weeks in Israel. Organizers have pledged to continue protests until the reform is completely canceled.
Opponents of the draft law argue that it would undermine the supreme court's ability to rule on laws and give the regime too much influence in judicial appointments. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu put the reform on hold in late March following a large-scale protest.
