TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A bomb, planted in a motorcycle, exploded outside the Sayeda Zeinab shrine in a southern suburb of the capital Damascus, resulting in several casualties.

State news agency SANA reported that six citizens were killed on Thursday, and nearly 23 others were injured in the terrorist explosion in Damascus countryside.

The explosion occurred when a motorcycle was detonated near a taxi on the Kou Sudan street in Sayeda Zeinab, as stated by SANA.

In response to the attack, the Syrian Interior Ministry released a statement on telegram, mentioning that authorities quickly responded to the incident, transporting the bodies of the victims and the injured to hospitals.

The tragic incident coincides with the commemoration of Imam Hossein's (AS) martyrdom, observed with mourning ceremonies by millions of Muslims.

This marks the second attack at the shrine this week, following a separate blast on Tuesday that wounded two individuals.

The Sayeda Zeinab shrine holds immense significance for Shiite Muslims globally, attracting mass pilgrimage. It is the burial place of Sayeda Zeinab, the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, condemned the Thursday bomb attack in Damascus, urging the world to help Syria by putting an end to the "cruel sanctions" imposed on the nation.

Kanani offered condolences to the Syrian government, the nation, and the victims' families affected by the tragic motorcycle explosion.

He expressed concern over the impact of Western sanctions on Syria, pointing out the role of terrorist groups backed by the Zionist regime and the US in such heinous crimes.

The Iranian spokesman called for global condemnation of terror attacks and Israeli aerial assaults on Syria, while emphasizing the need to lift the Western sanctions and provide humanitarian aid to the country.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred on the eve of Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammad's grandson, Hossein ibn Ali.

The Sayeda Zeinab shrine continues to attract Shiite Muslim pilgrims from various parts of the world, but it has faced previous attacks, with the terrorist Daesh group having claimed some incidents, including one in 2017 that resulted in the death of at least 40 people.
