Iran, Sudan Resume Ties after 7 Years

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Sudan have agreed to restore diplomatic relations after seven years. The rapprochement comes three months after a meeting between their foreign ministers.

In a joint statement released on Monday, Iran and Sudan announced their decision to restore diplomatic ties.

What follows is the statement published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran about the development:

“In the Name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Sudan have decided to resume their diplomatic relations following contacts between their high-ranking officials in recent months and in line with their national interests.

The two countries agreed to expand their friendly ties based on mutual respect to their sovereignty, equality, mutual interest and peaceful coexistence.

The two sides agreed to deepen their ties in different areas that would serve the interests of both nations and would be conducive to regional stability.

They also agreed to take necessary measures to reopen their embassies in the near future and do necessary coordination to exchange their official delegations in order to explore ways of expanding cooperation between Tehran and Khartoum.

The agreement was made on October 9, 2023.”

Sudan, currently in the midst of a devastating war, cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 following the storming of the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran.

Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to resume ties in March under a deal negotiated by China, raising expectations that Tehran and other Arab countries would fully re-establish diplomatic relations.
