According to CTV News, it started with a 911 call about someone breaking into a home in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, around 10:20 pm Monday local time officers found a 41-year-old person deceased with a gunshot wound at the residence, Bernama reported.

About 10 minutes later, another 911 call came in about someone with a gun at a home about three kilometers away. When officers arrived, they found a 45-year-old with a gunshot wound. Inside the home, officers found three children, ages six, seven, and 12, fatally shot along with the 44-year-old shooter, who was found deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the report said.

The two incidents were connected and were the result of intimate partner violence, local police said, adding that these were not random acts of violence and there was no ongoing risk to public safety.

Sault Ste. Marie is a city located on the St. Mary’s River on the Canada-US border.
