Makran to Become Iran’s 3rd Largest Petchem Hub: Official
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Makran coastal region in southeast of Iran will turn into the country’s third largest petrochemical hub with an investment of €20 billion, €8 billion of which has been already attracted, an official said.
Makran coastal area is one of the main crossroads in the southern trade corridor in the world. Due to its strategic location and access to the high seas, Iran’s Chabahar port has a special place in the exchange of goods across the region.
One of the most important privileges of Makran is its vicinity to the high seas along the southern border, direct neighborhood with Pakistan and Afghanistan, and indirect ground links with the Central Asian countries through Turkmenistan.
Iran has in recent years carried out several petrochemical projects in Makran.
According to plans, the third largest petrochemical company of Iran will be constructed in the vicinity of Chabahar and will turn Makran into a major hub of petrochemical industry after Assaluyeh and Mahshahr.
“With the special emphasis of Leader of the Islamic Revolution in late 2000s on the development of Makran region, the then cabinet of ministers approved in 2011 that the third petrochemical hub of the country should be constructed in this strategic region,” CEO of Negin Makran Petrochemical Development Company Alireza Moniri Abyaneh said.
So far, four investors have made a total investment of €8 billion in the development of the petrochemical plants in Makran, whose first unit is predicted to come into operation in early 2025, he added, noting that the completion of the project will require an investment of €20 billion.
