Iran Calls UN Ceasefire Resolution in Gaza Positive but Insufficient

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani, has welcomed the UN Security Council's resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza as a positive but insufficient step.

Kanaani said in a short statement on Monday midnight that after six months of failure to adopt a deterring resolution on Israel’s “war crimes and genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza, the UN Security Council vote was “a positive but insufficient step”.

"A more important step than adopting this resolution is [an] effective action to implement it,” Kannani said.

He also called for the complete and long-term cessation of Zionist regime’s aggression against Gaza and the southwestern coast, the cessation of the Gaza siege, and the reopening of humanitarian aid crossings. Kanaani also advocated for international assistance and resources to begin immediate reconstruction of Gaza, particularly homes, critical infrastructure, and hospitals.

Kanaani described the "child-killing Zionist regime's" response to the resolution as a clear indication of their anger over their "irreparable defeat both on the field and in international politics." He expressed his expectation that the UN Security Council would hold the regime accountable for its crimes against the Palestinian people over the last six months, as well as any potential continuation of these atrocities despite the resolution.

The UN Security Council approved a resolution for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan and the release of Israeli captives, with the US abstaining from vetoing it. The resolution was globally welcomed but opposed by Israel. This decision followed Israel's raid on Al Shifa hospital that resulted in the deaths of over a dozen patients. As fighting continued around the al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza on Tuesday, the al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis remained non-operational due to an Israeli siege.
