AI Helps Detect 40,000 Cases of Unlawful Land Use in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Information Technology Organization of Iran said it has utilized artificial intelligence to detect more than 40,000 cases of unauthorized land use change across the country during the previous Persian year, which ended on March 19.

Thousands of hectares of land have been monitored and screened in Iran with the help of artificial intelligence, the Information Technology Organization said.

The AI-assisted land monitoring system processes and compares satellite images before and after the change of land use in different time periods. It has successfully identified more than 40,000 cases of change of land use across the country.

These satellite image processing procedures have allowed for the protection of 20,000 hectares of land across Iran.

The employment of artificial intelligence algorithms in processing the satellite images, conducted by two domestic knowledge-based companies, has improved the accuracy of detection of violations by 45 percent.

In July 2023, the Iranian Space Agency said the homegrown Khayyam satellite has commenced remote sensing activities to monitor and map land use changes.

In collaboration with the Information Technology Organization of Iran, the Space Agency has been working on legal procedures to prepare and present the initial batch of satellite images to judicial authorities combating land expropriation.
