Iran Election Results Confirmed by Constitutional Council

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Constitutional Council of Iran verified the authenticity of the final results of the nationwide presidential election that was held on June 28, as the polls have been headed for a runoff slated for next Friday.

Speaking to state TV on Sunday, the spokesman for the council said it has confirmed the correctness and validity of the presidential elections and formally informed the Interior Ministry of the verification process.

Hadi Tahan Nazif said the Constitutional Council had determined a time span for the complaints and objections, but it did not receive any, neither from the candidates nor the voters.

Pointing to preparations for the runoff, the spokesman said the two final rivals can run their electoral campaigns until 24 hours before the start of the election.

Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili, the two candidates with the highest number of votes, will face off in a showdown on July 5.

A total of 24,535,185 votes were cast in the polls, translating into a turnout of 39.92%, as over 61,452,000 people were eligible to vote.

Pezeshkian won 10,415,991 votes, equivalent to 42.45% of the ballots.

The runner-up, Jalili, secured 38.61% of the votes with 9,473,298 ballots.

The polls were held at around 59,000 polling stations across the country.

The election took place a year ahead of schedule, as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi passed away in May.

A helicopter carrying President Raisi and his entourage crashed in northwestern mountainous forests on May 19, killing the president, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and six others.
