US Not Competent to Mediate in Gaza Truce: Iranian Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The US government is too incompetent to play a role in the negotiations on a ceasefire in Gaza since Washington has always thrown its weight behind the Zionist regime’s killing machine in Palestine, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.

In comments at a presser on Monday, Nasser Kanaani said Iran welcomes any sincere effort at the establishment of a ceasefire in Gaza, where the Israeli regime has killed over 40,000 Palestinians since October 2023.

Iran has employed all of its capacities in recent months to stop the Zionist regime’s war machine, he added.

The spokesman also stated that Iran believes that the US government is not competent by any means to work on the Gaza ceasefire case, referring to Washington’s dark record of supporting the Israeli atrocities.

The US has always been a staunch supporter and ally of the criminal Zionist regime, has consistently reaffirmed commitment to protecting the Israeli regime’s security, and has unwaveringly stood by Israel in its genocide against Gaza over the past 10 months, the spokesman added.

“The US has proved to be a party to the war, not a competent party to ceasefire. If the US government had had serious determination, it would have been able to stop the (Israeli) regime’s slaughter machine,” Kanaani added.

The US, Egypt and Qatar have been acting as mediators in a number of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

The last round of talks ended on Friday in Qatar, with no resolution. It is expected to resume again in Egypt’s Cairo this week.

Meanwhile, in Gaza, the Israeli regime’s deadly attacks continue, with the death toll from Israel’s bombardment now more than 40,000, according to Palestinian health authorities.
