US Online Banking, Phone Services Hit by Outages

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Thousands of Bank of America and Verizon customers faced disruptions as online banking systems and phone services went down, with reports of incorrect balances and connection issues.

Thousands of Bank of America customers experienced an online outage that disrupted ATMs and led to incorrect balances showing on accounts.

By 12:20 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, more than 20,000 people reported issues with Bank of America’s online and mobile banking systems, as well as ATM services, according to Downdetector.

Of those reports, 57% involved problems with online banking, 42% cited mobile banking issues, and 1% reported difficulties with ATMs, the website noted.

On social media, some customers reported seeing a $0 balance upon logging in, while others struggled to reach customer service. In many cases, phone lines were down, or customers experienced long wait times, transfers, and disconnections.

Bank of America’s social media team responded to complaints on X (formerly Twitter), requesting more information but did not provide details about the cause of the outage or how long it might last.

The bank did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, Verizon customers faced a similar disruption, with many phones stuck in SOS mode due to an apparent outage on September 30. Although Verizon reported the issue was resolved, complaints continued as of October 1.

The first signs of the Verizon outage appeared at around 10:00 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector, with a surge in reports from customers struggling to place calls. By 7:00 p.m. ET, many Verizon users said they could make calls again, and the situation appeared stable overnight.

There has been no confirmed cause for the outage, but Verizon engineers are investigating. Affected customers reported being unable to make both outbound and inbound calls, with many phones entering SOS mode.

This mode is typically activated when a phone disconnects from the network, either due to poor connection or issues on the carrier’s end. The outage affected both iPhone and Android users and disrupted Wi-Fi calling services.

As of 6:15 p.m. ET, Verizon said service had been restored, though customers continue to report intermittent issues.
