In a statement released on Friday, the Parliament of Iran dismissed as “totally incorrect” the media outlets’ interpretation on Qalibaf’s interview with Le Figaro.
The statement emphasized that the stances adopted by the Parliament speaker on the ongoing developments in Lebanon are no different from his comments made at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly, his recent visit to Lebanon, or in talks with the press.
The statement said the stances adopted by Qalibaf are crystal clear, noting that the Parliament speaker has told Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati that Iran would support what is approved by Lebanon’s government and resistance for the achievement of sustainable ceasefire.
“Naturally, no party should imagine that it can reach a sustainable political deal without the approval of resistance. Therefore, cooperation with Europe to contribute to a ceasefire acceptable to the resistance and the government of Lebanon could be on Iran’s agenda,” the Iranian Parliament added.
The statement came after Le Figaro quoted Qalibaf as saying in an interview that Iran might be open to negotiating with France on implementing UN Resolution 1701, which stipulates that only the Lebanese army can be deployed in South Lebanon.
