Esmaeil Baqaei on Thursday congratulated Joseph Aoun, the Lebanese government and people, and all political groups and parties in the Arab country.

He described the election of the new president as a result of agreement and compromise among the majority of the Lebanese groups and parties and a success for entire Lebanon.

Baqaei expressed hope that the election of the president would help Lebanon strengthen its unity and domestic solidarity, pave the way for its progress and development, allow Lebanon to overcome the economic challenges and repair the damages caused by the Israeli regime’s brutal onslaught, and help the Arab country safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity against the Zionist regime’s threats.

Highlighting the age-old relations between Tehran and Beirut, the spokesman expressed Iran’s readiness to expand relations with the Lebanese government in all fields.

The Lebanese lawmakers on Thursday ended a two-year presidential deadlock by electing General Joseph Aoun, the respected army commander, as the nation’s 14th president.

Joseph Aoun is the latest military figure to ascend to the presidency, joining predecessors such as Fouad Chehab and Michel Sleiman.
