Pezeshkian: Iran, Russia Won’t Cave In to Excessive Demands

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described a treaty on strategic cooperation that Tehran and Moscow have signed recently as a testimony to their determination to stand against the excessive demands, protect security, and develop economy in the region together.

Pezeshkian made the comment in an interview with Russia’s Channel One during his trip to Moscow on January 17, when he and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin signed the Treaty on Strategic Partnership between the two states.

Iran is not a newly created country established based on the viewpoints of those pushing for their excessive demands, Pezeshkian said, his official website reported.

He added that Iran has existed and continues to exist, saying Tehran-Moscow Strategic Partnership Treaty shows that “neither Iran nor Russia will give in to the demands they (outsiders) want.”

The two countries have the ability to adopt policies, develop economy, and ensure security, tranquility and development in the region together, he said.

On Iran-Russia security arrangements, the president said that both sides have pledged not to cooperate with a third party who attacks one of them, adding that security cooperation is underway between the two countries, as its details will be set based on the next agreements.

He also rejected the Western allegations that Iran seeks to attain a nuclear bomb.

"We are not seeking war, bloodshed, or unrest, but they want to promote and create the idea in the minds of the world that we want to make nuclear bombs and that we are causing insecurity in the region. They should count the terrorist acts of the Zionist regime and the US in the region and compare them with other acts of terrorism; they are not even comparable! Those who kill people claim to defend human rights, while those who die from bombs and terrorism are labeled terrorists. Are women, children, and the sick who are killed considered terrorists?"

The enemies attempt to tell the world that Iran is seeking atomic bomb, while Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has emphasized that the country is not after nuclear weapons, the president said.

Asked about Iran’s responses to the economic terrorism and the assassinations of prominent figures such as Lt. General Qassem Soleimani and former Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh, Pezeshkian said the Zionist regime assassinated Iranian commanders and scientists under the pretext that those people created insecurity in the region, while the Zionists defy international regulations.

Regarding Iran’s defensive power, Pezeshkian said Iran is capable of defending its territory, and at the same time, it does not intend to attack other nations.

Ruling out the Zionist regime’s claims that Iran is anti-Semitic, he noted that Iran is not against anybody, but it opposes crimes and tyranny. “Iran believes all followers of divine religions are respectable,” he added.

Denouncing the negative role of foreign powers in the region, the president said that certain powers create unrest in the West Asia region to loot its oil, gas and minerals.

Asked about his friendship with Russian President Putin, Pezeshkian said, "We are gradually aligning our perspectives, and the sentiment that Mr. Putin has regarding his stance against unilateralism, believing that there should be multilateralism, is being strengthened day by day in us and in those who seek their own freedom and independence. As a result, we feel this sense of companionship and closeness in our beliefs, and we will be together."
