IRGC to Use AI for Military Applications

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps unveiled plans to utilize artificial intelligence for military purposes, such as in naval operations and air defense.

Addressing a conference on “artificial intelligence and the future civilization”, held in Tehran on Wednesday, Major General Hossein Salami said the IRGC is going to take advantage of AI for military purposes while observing moral principles.

He said the AI would help the IRGC Navy to detect and target a hostile ship that may switch off its transponder or change its location miles away, without harming the innocent crew of the vessels that provide logistical support for the enemies.

AI can also let the naval forces choose the best spot to hit the target, the commander said, adding that a large hostile vessel may not be damaged in a drone attack unless its center of mass is hit with the help of AI.

Highlighting the applications of AI in air defense, General Salami said that artificial intelligence can replace humans as it can choose from numerous approaching targets with precision and promptness.

Iran needs to utilize AI in all fields, such as transportation, maritime, ground and aerial traffic control, healthcare services, and aviation safety, in which time is a vital element, the commander added.

During a recent war game in the Persian Gulf, the IRGC Navy’s drones fired missiles featuring artificial intelligence capabilities.

The IRGC has equipped its Mohajer-6 and Ababil-5 military drones with a new version of Qaem and Almas missiles that incorporate AI capabilities to hit the targets.
