Russia-US Talks Begin in Riyadh as Part of Saudi Mediation Efforts

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Talks between Russia and the United States commenced on Tuesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, as both sides seek to address strained relations and the conflict in Ukraine, according to Russian and US media reports.

The discussions are taking place at Diriyah Palace, a venue provided by Saudi Arabia as part of its diplomatic efforts to facilitate dialogue, according to Anadolu.

Russia's delegation is led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and includes presidential aide Yury Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

On the US side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio leads the delegation, accompanied by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

Officials from both countries stated that the meeting also serves as preparation for a future summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

The talks began in the presence of Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

Ahead of the formal negotiations, representatives from both sides engaged in informal discussions, according to Dmitriev.

He estimated that American businesses have lost over $300 billion since exiting the Russian market.

"Finding joint economic ways and positive solutions to issues is extremely important mainly for the US and for many other countries, which are beginning to understand that the Russian market is extremely attractive and it is necessary to be present," Dmitriev said.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that Saudi Arabia was chosen as the host due to its acceptability to both sides.

He added that discussions regarding European participation in talks over Ukraine remain premature.

Meanwhile, the US State Department stated that Rubio’s engagements are focused on advancing US interests in regional cooperation, stability, and peace.
