Israeli Soldiers Express Frustration Over Gaza War in Letter to Army Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Hundreds of Israeli reserve officers and soldiers have sent a letter to Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, expressing their frustration over the ongoing war in Gaza, Israeli Public Broadcasting Authority KAN reported on Thursday.

In the letter, the troops stated that they had "returned to turmoil in the Gaza Strip, without clear objectives," urging Zamir to clarify the mission's goals and establish a definitive timeline for achieving them. KAN described the letter as "unusual."

According to Israel's Yedioth Ahronoth, nearly 170,000 soldiers —including thousands of reservists returning from combat— have signed up for a psychological treatment program initiated by the Ministry of Defense since February 19.

The Israeli army launched a surprise aerial campaign on the Gaza Strip on March 18, killing 855 people, injuring nearly 1,900 others and shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and the Palestinian resistance group Hamas that took hold in January.

Since the start of Israel’s genocidal military campaign in Gaza in October 2023, more than 50,000 Palestinians —mostly women and children— have been killed, while over 113,900 have been injured.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its military actions in the enclave.
