Iran to Equip Afghan Border Wall with Advanced Weapons: Army Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The commander of Iran's Army Ground Force unveiled plans to furnish a fence along the common border with Afghanistan with state-of-the-art weapons.

In comments at a press conference on Sunday morning, Brigadier General Kioumars Heidari said Iran is working on a border wall along its frontier with Afghanistan.

Describing the border fence as a project “at the cutting edge of world technology”, the general said, “This is not merely a wall four meters in height. It has been equipped with various weapons at the cutting edge of technology.”

The commander noted that the four-year project on the border wall is expected to come into operation by the next three years.

Several armed clashes have erupted at the border areas between Iran and Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021.

Iran is also grappling with an influx of Afghan migrants crossing the border in the hope of gaining access to basic rights, such as food safety, education and healthcare.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated the number of Afghan immigrants in Iran at around 3 million. However, this number is likely much higher, given the wave of new arrivals, many of them undocumented.
