Iran Briefs Grossi on US Talks, Urges IAEA to Act Professionally

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi briefed the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency on the course of negotiations between Tehran and Washington, calling on the UN nuclear agency to act professionally irrespective of external pressures.

In a meeting in Tehran on Wednesday, Araqchi and Rafael Grossi talked about the process of cooperation and technical interaction between Iran and the IAEA.

Araqchi also briefed Grossi on the recent indirect negotiations between Iran and the US in Oman, which were focused on the removal of sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program.

Reaffirming Iran’s commitment to working in cooperation with the UN nuclear agency in accordance with its legal and international obligations, the foreign minister stressed the need for the IAEA to act professionally and fulfill its technical duties without being influenced by the pressures from the other parties.

He also urged the UN nuclear agency to adopt transparent stances against the threats to the nuclear facilities of Iran.

For his part, Grossi emphasized the necessity for continued cooperation between the IAEA and Iran to contribute to the settlement of the outstanding issues.

The UN nuclear chief also welcomed the start of talks between Iran and the US, voiced the IAEA’s full support for the process, and expressed hope that the negotiations would continue until the achievement of the desired results.

Delegations from Iran and the US held a round of indirect talks in Muscat on April 12, mediated by the foreign minister of Oman.

The two sides, led by Araqchi and the US president’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, have expressed satisfaction with the initial steps.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for April 19.
