Iran-US Talks Kick Off in Rome

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The second round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the US got underway in Italy on Saturday.

Delegations from the two sides, led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and the US president’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, have started the fresh round of indirect talks at the Embassy of Oman in Rome.

The previous round of negotiations was held in Muscat on April 12.

The Iranian foreign minister had a meeting with his Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi prior to the talks with the US.

In another meeting he had with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Saturday morning, Araqchi stressed the need to seize the opportunity to strike a “logical and rational” deal over Iran’s nuclear program that would entail the removal of sanctions against Tehran through trust-building measures.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi has also taken part in the talks in Rome.

During a visit to Tehran on April 17, Grossi said the UN nuclear agency wants to play a role in the process of negotiations between Iran and the US.

Grossi has insisted that any possible deal between Iran and the US needs to be valid, which requires the IAEA’s verification.
