Russia Has Major Role in Iran-US Talks: Spokeswoman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesperson for the Iranian administration highlighted the significant role that Russia plays in the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US.

Asked about the topics discussed in two rounds of indirect talks between Iran and the US in Muscat and Rome, Fatemeh Mohajerani said at a presser on Tuesday that a series of issues are Iran’s red lines and may not be subject to negotiations at all.

Pointing to Russia’s important role from the viewpoint of Iran, she said Tehran and Moscow are engaged in nuclear cooperation, which gives Russia a significant role in the negotiations between Iran and the US.

The spokeswoman reiterated that the talks are focused on the effective removal of sanctions against Iran in exchange for further trust-building measures regarding its nuclear program.

She emphasized that Iran would not favor talks of attrition, saying, “The negotiations have moved forward well so far. We are looking for a good deal that would ensure the people’s interests. We believe that achievement of a good deal in the short term is possible with the protection of the national interests.”

Delegations from Iran and the US have held two rounds of talks in Oman and Italy in the past two weeks with the purpose of reaching a deal on Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions on Iran.

The two sides have agreed to proceed with technical talks at the level of experts in Oman on April 23, to be followed by a meeting of top negotiators on April 26.
