Enrichment inside Iran A Red Line: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry made it clear that under no circumstances will Tehran forgo its right to enrich uranium domestically.

Speaking to reporters at a weekly press conference on Monday, Esmaeil Baqaei said Iran has defined a number of red lines in the indirect negotiations with the US.

He said uranium enrichment inside Iran and the effective removal of sanctions constitute the red lines that Iran will never allow to be crossed in the talks with the US.

The spokesman explained that any negotiation would be held within certain general frameworks agreed upon by the two sides, which will allow for further discussions on the details.

“No agreement will be made on the details unless the general framework considered by Iran is taken into account. Those mentioned red lines are part of the negotiating principles of Iran and issues surrounding them will definitely be pursued with seriousness,” he stated.

The most recent round of indirect talks between Iran and the US, mediated by Oman, came to an end in Muscat on Saturday.

The two countries have held three rounds of talks in Oman and Italy during the past month with the purpose of reaching a deal on Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions on Tehran.
